New Travel Ban Blocks Entry from 12 Countries

President Trump signed Proclamation 10949 on June 4, 2025, and the restrictions took effect on June 9. The order fully suspends entry — for both immigrants and nonimmigrants — of nationals from 12 countries: Afghanistan, Burma (Myanmar), Chad, the Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen. Nationals of an additional seven countries face significant partial restrictions on certain visa categories.

The proclamation resulted from a national security review ordered on January 20, 2025. Agencies assessed risks based on factors including terrorism ties, inability to share reliable travel documents, and high rates of visa overstays.

If you are from one of the fully banned countries, you generally cannot receive a new US visa or enter the United States while the ban is in effect. Limited exceptions exist for diplomatic travel and some visa categories, but individual waivers are rarely granted.

People already lawfully in the United States are generally not directly affected. However, if you travel internationally and hold a passport from one of the listed countries, reentry may be blocked — even with a valid US visa or green card. Consult an immigration attorney before any international travel if you are from a listed country.
